What are Whitelisted apps?

A key aspect of Mobile Application Management (MAM) is Whitelisted apps. Whitelisted apps are applications that your IT departments and MDM admins have deemed as safe for employees to use freely on iPads and iPhones (Apple iOS devices) or Android phones and tablets.

What is the reason for Whitelisting apps?

Whitelisted apps are added to ensure that the applications being used are in fact the authorized apps and not malicious or otherwise inappropriate. These apps can be the same for all users in an organization or can be unique to each individual device group.Such apps may be used to perform tasks, edit files or documents or can even be private enterprise apps.

How do I Whitelist apps on Apple iPhones and iPads?

To Whitelist apps on Apple iOS devices:

  • On the MDM Dashboard, visit Step 1 of the MDM QuickStart module and click Apple iOS
  • In the Apple iOS Policies page, select a device group you want to create this policy for and click Whitelisted Apps
  • Click Add and search for the iPhone or iPad application you want to Whitelist
  • Select whether or not you want to make it optional or mandatory and click Add
  • Once you ve added your apps to the Whitelist, click Save All Policies

The next time the MDM system pings your devices, these Whitelisted apps will be available in the Apps catalog for those in the device group and, if set as Mandatory, can then be pushed to devices over-the-air.

How do I Whitelist apps on Android devices?

To Whitelist apps on Android devices:

  • On the MDM Dashboard, visit Step 1 of the MDM QuickStart module and click Android
  • In the Android Policies page, select a device group you want to create this policy for and click Whitelisted Apps
  • Click Add and search for the Android app you want to Whitelist
  • Select whether or not you want to make it optional or mandatory and click Add
  • Once you ve added your apps to the Whitelist, click Save All Policies

The next time the MDM system pings your devices, these Whitelisted apps will be available in Amtel MDM App under either Market Apps or Enterprise Apps for those in the device group and, if set as Mandatory, can then be automatically pushed to devices over-the-air.
